From time to time, a new fad becomes the rage, and – without thinking – everyone wants a part of it. This is especially true in the field of medical aesthetics, because many clinics would go to great length to achieve some sort of beauty goal. But we’d like to caution our patients against the risks of medical devices and equipment that are not regulated by Health Canada (sometimes used in other clinics).
As the federal regulator for therapeutic products, Health Canada provides an active licence listing here: MDALL – for the devices clinics may use. Using unlisted devices is illegal. However, due to the cost and cumbersome process of having devices approved by Health Canada, some manufacturers focus on other geographical markets. Yet, some clinics buy the devices from overseas and bring them into the country illegally.
While unapproved devices give patients access to treatments that may not otherwise be available in Canada, the repercussions may not be worth your while. Spas or clinics that use unapproved devices are not covered by insurance if they hurt a patient using the unapproved device.
