Lines & WrinklesWhat it is, and what we can do about it.

Lines and wrinkles are creases in the skin caused by repeated facial expression, the gradual loss of collagen and elastin, and cumulative sun exposure; they are a normal feature of ageing skin that can be softened and slowed with treatment but not permanently removed.

02 · The honest version

The honest version
of lines & wrinkles.

Fine lines, expression lines and deeper folds, and the treatments that soften them without changing how your face moves.

Lines & Wrinkles, as it typically presents. Yours may look different, which is why we assess before we treat.
  • -Horizontal lines across the forehead
  • -Vertical lines between the brows
  • -Crow's feet fanning out from the outer eyes
  • -Fine crinkling on the cheeks and upper lip
  • -Lines that used to appear only when you moved and now stay put
  • -Skin that looks papery or creased in photographs

Every face is different. This page is the general picture. What is actually happening on your skin is something a nurse should look at up close, in clinic light, before anyone recommends a treatment.

Does it get worse? That depends on the concern and on you. It is a reason to start early, not a reason to panic - and we will tell you plainly where you are rather than where a treatment plan would be easiest to sell.

What lines and wrinkles actually are

Every time you raise your brows, squint into the sun or smile at someone, the muscles under your skin fold it in the same direction. When you are young, the skin springs back. Over time it springs back a little less, because the collagen and elastin that give skin its recoil are produced more slowly and broken down more quickly than they once were. The fold becomes a crease, and eventually the crease stays there when your face is resting.

That is the honest mechanical picture, and it explains why one treatment does not fix everything.

The three different problems people call “wrinkles”

Dynamic lines are the ones that appear when you move: the horizontal forehead lines, the vertical frown lines between the brows, the crow’s feet at the outer eyes. The line is being created by muscle activity, so relaxing that muscle is the direct answer.

Static lines are visible when your face is completely still. The skin itself has been remodelled and thinned along the crease. Relaxing the muscle helps prevent it deepening, but improving a static line usually means rebuilding the skin around it with resurfacing, microneedling or a collagen-stimulating treatment, or supporting it with a small amount of filler.

Folds and shadows are not really wrinkles at all. Nasolabial folds and marionette lines are usually the result of volume moving and descending in the midface rather than the skin creasing. Treating them as if they were lines is one of the most common reasons people end up unhappy with a result. If that is what is bothering you, our page on facial volume loss is the more relevant read.

Why sun exposure matters more than almost anything else

Ultraviolet damage degrades collagen and elastin directly. It is the largest single cause of premature skin ageing that you can actually do something about, and it is also the reason two people of the same age can have visibly different skin. This is not a moral point about sunscreen. It is simply the highest-leverage habit available, and it makes every in-clinic treatment you have last longer and work better.

How we approach it at the clinic

Our assessment starts with watching your face move. That sounds simple, but it is the part that decides everything: which lines are muscle-driven, which are skin-quality issues, where volume has shifted, and where the skin is thin enough that a heavier-handed approach would look wrong.

From there, a plan is usually built in layers rather than all at once. Neuromodulator treatment for the lines that move. Skin-quality work such as microneedling, Morpheus8 or CO2 laser resurfacing for texture and etched lines. Hydration and structural support where the skin has thinned. Deciding what not to treat is as much a part of that conversation as deciding what to treat.

Every plan at Bradford Skin Clinic & Medical Spa is assessed and signed off within a nurse-practitioner-led practice, and treatments are performed by regulated nurses. If we think a line is better left alone, or that your money would go further on skin health than on injectables this year, we will say so.

04 · What we actually offer

Six things, and
what each one does.

These are the ones we use for lines & wrinkles. Not every face needs all of them, and we will say so. The goal in every case is the same: treat the cause, not the photograph.

Dermal fillers

Injectable

Hyaluronic acid gel placed in specific planes to restore support where the face has lost it, or to change a proportion you have never liked.

A clinician treating a client's lower face with a radiofrequency microneedling handpiece

Morpheus8

Skin & laser

Microneedling combined with radiofrequency energy delivered at depth, aimed at laxity and contour rather than at the skin surface.

A clinician in sterile gloves passing a microneedling device across a client's cheek

Microneedling

Skin & laser

Sterile needles creating thousands of controlled micro-channels so the skin repairs itself with new collagen, at a depth chosen for your concern.

A clinician performing fractional CO2 laser resurfacing on a client's face

CO2 resurfacing

Skin & laser

An ablative fractional laser that removes columns of damaged skin so the surrounding tissue heals into something smoother and firmer.

A close-up of a fine needle delivering a skinbooster into the cheek

Skinboosters

Injectable

Soft hyaluronic acid spread through the skin itself to improve hydration, bounce and light reflection, without changing your shape.

Every plan is personalised. Which of these you need, in what order and how often, is decided after a nurse has looked at your skin - not before. We will also tell you when a treatment is wrong for you, and we say it before you book.

05 · What actually happens

Come in as you are.
Nobody here will
react to your skin.

If you have been putting this off, this section is for you. A consultation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing - you are allowed to walk out having booked absolutely nothing.

  1. Sheli greets you at the front desk

She is the one who answers the phone and the texts, so you will already have spoken to her. No clipboard interrogation in the waiting room.

  2. A nurse looks at your skin properly

In clinic light, up close, with your makeup off if you are wearing any. This is the part people dread and it takes about a minute.

  3. We ask about the history, not just the face

When it happens, what you had noticed before it happened, what you have already tried and what made it worse. Bring your current products if it is easy.

  4. You get a written plan and a real price

What we would do, in what order, and what it costs - including the option of doing nothing yet. If a treatment is wrong for you, we say so here, not after.

  5. You decide in your own time

Nothing is booked in the room unless you want it booked. No deposit, no pressure, no offer that expires on Friday.

Lines & Wrinkles, asked
and answered.

The questions people actually ask us on the phone, answered the way we answer them on the phone.

What is the difference between a dynamic and a static wrinkle?

A dynamic wrinkle only appears when you make an expression, and a static wrinkle is visible when your face is completely at rest. The distinction matters because it usually decides the treatment: dynamic lines respond well to a neuromodulator such as Botox, Dysport or Xeomin, while static lines that have become etched into the skin usually need something that rebuilds the skin itself, such as resurfacing, microneedling or filler.

Will treatment make my face look frozen?

It should not, and that is a matter of dosing and placement rather than the product. Your injector maps how your muscles actually move before anything is injected, and a conservative starting dose can always be added to at a review appointment. Tell your injector at the consultation how much movement you want to keep, because that genuinely changes the plan.

Am I too young for wrinkle treatment?

There is no age at which this becomes appropriate, and no age at which it stops being your decision. Some people start when a line begins to stay visible at rest; others prefer to focus on sun protection and skin health first. Our injectors will tell you honestly if they think you do not need a treatment yet.

Can skincare alone get rid of wrinkles?

Skincare can improve the texture, hydration and tone of the skin, and daily SPF genuinely slows how quickly new lines form, but topical products cannot restore lost volume or relax an overactive muscle. The most durable results usually come from combining good daily skincare with in-clinic treatment rather than choosing one or the other.

Does the treatment hurt?

Most people describe injectable treatments for lines as a brief sting rather than pain, and the needles used are very fine. Energy-based treatments such as CO2 laser resurfacing and Morpheus8 are done with topical numbing, and your clinician will talk you through comfort options before starting.

How long do the results last?

It depends entirely on which treatment you have, how your body metabolises it and how much sun exposure the area gets. Neuromodulators wear off gradually, fillers break down over time, and collagen-stimulating treatments build slowly and then fade. Your clinician will give you a realistic expectation for your specific plan rather than a generic number.

What can I do at home to slow new lines forming?

Daily broad-spectrum SPF is the single most effective thing, because ultraviolet exposure is the largest modifiable cause of premature skin ageing. Beyond that, a retinoid if your skin tolerates one, not smoking, and keeping your skin barrier intact all help. We will build a home routine around whatever in-clinic work you have.

Do I need a consultation first?

Yes. Every plan at our clinic starts with an assessment so we can look at how your face moves, what your skin quality is like and what is actually bothering you. That conversation often changes the plan, and occasionally it means we recommend less than you came in expecting.

Check it yourself.

We would rather you did not take our word for any of this. These are the sources behind what is written above, and none of them are ours.

07 · Often confused, often alongside

Not sure it's
lines & wrinkles?

Concerns are regularly mistaken for one another - and they rarely turn up entirely alone. These are the ones that sit closest to it.

08 · The next step is small

Let a nurse look
at it properly.

A lines & wrinkles consultation costs you nothing and commits you to nothing. You will leave knowing what your skin is doing, what we would do about it, and what it would cost - whether or not you book anything.

Book a consultation

Bring three things. Whatever you are currently putting on your face, a rough idea of when it is at its worst, and any questions you have written down. That is genuinely all the preparation we need.

Makeup is fine either way. If it is easier to arrive with it on, arrive with it on - there is a mirror and a cleanser in the room.
