Bradford Skin Clinic in Bradford, Ontario provides injector training and
medical directorship to Registered Nurses and Registered Practical Nurses across Ontario,
led by Alex Dinovich, NP, a Nurse Practitioner and authorized provider. Training teaches you
to inject. Medical directorship is what makes it lawful for you to do so. Most nurses need
both, and almost nobody tells you that before you have paid for the course.
Ontario does not issue an injector licence. There is no such
document, and no course can hand you one.
Injecting a neuromodulator or a dermal filler involves two controlled acts under the
Regulated Health Professions Act: administering a substance by injection, and performing
a procedure below the dermis. A Registered Nurse or Registered Practical Nurse cannot
initiate either one independently. You need an authorizing mechanism, an order or a
directive, from an authorized provider.
So a training certificate proves you were taught. It does not make the act lawful. That
is a separate thing, it comes from a separate person, and it is the part most nurses
find out about after the course has been paid for.
Note also that this is not about prescriptions alone. Neuromodulators are prescription
drugs. Dermal fillers are regulated as medical devices, not drugs, and still need an
authorizing mechanism, because the requirement comes from the controlled acts rather
than from drug scheduling. Anyone who tells you fillers are simpler than that has not
read the legislation.
Training happens in a working clinic, not a hotel function room.
Can an RN or RPN inject in Ontario without a medical director?
No. Injecting a neuromodulator or a dermal filler involves two controlled acts under the Regulated Health Professions Act: administering a substance by injection, and performing a procedure below the dermis. An RN or RPN cannot initiate those acts independently and needs an authorizing mechanism, such as an order or a directive, from an authorized provider. A Nurse Practitioner or a physician can be that provider.
Is a training certificate the same as authority to inject?
No, and this is the most expensive misunderstanding in the industry. Ontario has no injector licence. A course certificate is evidence that you were taught something. Your authority to perform the controlled act comes separately, from an authorizing mechanism issued by an authorized provider. You need both, and they come from different places.
Can a Nurse Practitioner be a medical director instead of a physician?
Yes. A Nurse Practitioner in Ontario is an autonomous provider who can assess, diagnose, prescribe and author directives. For an aesthetic practice that is often a better fit than a physician who is not in the building and does not do this work daily.
Do you take on nurses who did their training somewhere else?
Yes. Medical directorship and training are separate services and you can take either one on its own. If you trained elsewhere we will want to see what you were taught and watch you work before anything is signed, which is the same standard we would want applied to us.
