What it is

What buttocks peel
actually does.

A body peel for congestion, roughness and dark marks on the buttocks. From $299 at our nurse-practitioner-led clinic in Bradford, Ontario.

The treatment nobody wants to ask about

Body breakouts on the buttocks are extremely common and almost never discussed, which means most people arrive having already tried a series of scrubs, body washes and internet suggestions that made the texture worse rather than better.

The first useful thing we do is tell you what you actually have, because three different problems present in almost exactly the same way.

Folliculitis is inflammation of the hair follicle, driven by friction, occlusion, sweat and sometimes bacteria. It looks like acne and is not.

Keratosis pilaris is a build-up of keratin around the follicle, producing rough, bumpy skin that often feels like sandpaper. It is genetic, it is not an infection, and scrubbing it aggravates it.

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation is the flat brown or grey mark left after any of the above has settled. For many people this is the real complaint. The bumps have gone; the marks have not.

What the peel does

Body skin is thicker than facial skin and it turns over more slowly, so a facial peel applied to the buttocks does very little. This uses a body-appropriate formulation, applied to loosen the bonds holding dead keratin and debris in and around the follicles, clear the surface, and speed the turnover that clears discolouration.

Where the result actually comes from

Honestly, half of it is behavioural, and we would rather tell you that than sell you a series of peels that get undone every week.

Sitting for long periods in damp gym clothing, tight synthetic fabrics, occlusive body products and shaving or waxing the area all keep the process going. Loose cotton, showering promptly after exercise, and stopping the scrubbing regime you are probably on will do a substantial part of the work. We go through this at your appointment.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits you if you have rough texture, congestion, folliculitis or the marks left after them, and you are willing to make a couple of practical changes alongside the treatment.

It does not suit you if you have deep, painful cystic lesions or an infection, both of which need a prescriber rather than a peel. It does not suit you if you have an unexplained rash, which should be looked at properly before anything is applied to it. And it will not correct raised or indented scarring.

At the appointment

The area is assessed and cleansed and you are positioned comfortably and draped, with only the treatment area exposed. The solution is applied evenly and timed, and your clinician watches for the endpoint rather than working to the clock alone. You will feel warmth and stinging. The peel is then neutralised or allowed to self-neutralise and a soothing preparation is applied.

Afterwards

Expect pinkness, warmth and then flaking over the following days. Wear loose clothing. Keep the area clean and dry, avoid heat, sweating and friction for the period you are advised, and do not shave or wax until it has settled.

Do not exfoliate the flaking skin off. Pulling it early is the fastest route to a new dark mark in place of the one you came in to treat.

Every area is assessed and mapped before anything is drawn up.

If it is wrong for you, we say so before you book again. A nurse-practitioner-led clinic has a licence at stake. That is the whole reason we are careful - and the reason the honest answer sometimes is "not this, and not yet".

Concerns

What it treats.

Every concern below is one we would consider buttocks peel for. Open any of them for the honest version: what actually causes it, and what we would and would not do.

Being straight with you

When we would
tell you no.

Every clinic lists who a treatment suits. This is the other half. If any of these is you, say so at the consultation and we will talk about what else might work, or about waiting.

  • You have deep, painful cystic lesions. That needs a prescriber rather than a peel.
  • You have an unexplained rash on the area. Have it looked at before anything is applied.
  • Your concern is raised or indented scarring. A peel will not change either.
  • You cannot avoid the gym, the sauna and tight clothing for the healing period.
  • You want one appointment and a finished result. Body skin turns over slowly.
  • You have a history of keloid scarring. Raise it before we choose an agent.

How it works

Four appointments'
worth of care.

Nothing here happens on the same visit you first walk in, unless you want it to and it is right for you. This is the order we work in.

  1. 01

    Consult

We look at what is actually bothering you, ask what you have tried, and tell you honestly whether this is the right treatment. Costs nothing and commits you to nothing.

  2. 02

    Plan

Your clinician maps the plan with you and agrees it before you commit to anything. The plan is signed off by our Medical Director before treatment begins.

  3. 03

    Treatment

Your clinician carries out the plan exactly as it was agreed. You are told what is happening, where and why, before it starts - and the quoted price does not change on the chair.

  4. 04

    Review

We see you again to check the result and adjust the plan for next time. The first appointment is the start of the plan, not the whole of it.

Questions people actually ask

Straight answers.

What is a buttocks peel?

It is a chemical peel formulated for body skin and applied to the buttocks, to treat congestion, rough or bumpy texture, and the dark marks left behind by previous breakouts and friction. Body skin is thicker and slower to respond than facial skin, so the peel used and the way it is applied are different from a facial peel.

What does it cost?

The buttocks peel is from $299 at our Bradford clinic. We confirm the plan and the final cost at consultation, including whether we think you need a series rather than a single treatment.

What causes bumps and marks on the buttocks?

Usually a combination of friction, occlusion and sweat rather than acne in the way it appears on the face. Tight clothing, long periods of sitting, damp gym wear and shaving or waxing all contribute, and folliculitis, keratosis pilaris and post-inflammatory pigmentation are the most common findings. Treatment works better when the cause is addressed at the same time.

Is this the same as an acne treatment?

Not quite. Much of what people call buttock acne is folliculitis, an inflammation of the hair follicle, rather than true acne, and some of it is keratosis pilaris. They look similar and they respond to different things. Assessing which you have is part of the appointment, and if the answer is that you need a prescriber rather than a peel, we will say so.

Will the dark marks go?

The flat brown or grey marks left after inflammation generally improve with treatment and with time, and that is what most people are actually asking about. It is a gradual process, not a single-session change, and it holds only if the underlying breakouts stop recurring. Raised or indented scarring is a different problem with a different answer.

How many sessions will I need?

Body skin responds more slowly than facial skin, so this is normally planned as a series rather than a one-off. We will set out how many we think you need at consultation and quote it, rather than booking you in repeatedly and letting the cost accumulate.

What is aftercare like?

Expect the area to be pink, warm and then flaky for a period. You will be asked to wear loose clothing, keep the area clean and dry, avoid the gym, sauna and hot tubs for a while, and skip shaving or waxing the area until you are told it has settled. Do not pick or scrub the flaking skin.

Who should not have it?

We do not treat over active infection, broken or weeping skin, sunburn, or an unexplained rash that has not been assessed. We do not treat in pregnancy without careful selection of the agent, and recent isotretinoin use requires an interval. If you have a history of keloid scarring, raise it at consultation.
