Why there is a Naturopathic Doctor in a skin clinic

Naturopathic Doctors are regulated in Ontario

This is worth stating because the word naturopath is used loosely elsewhere. In Ontario, Naturopathic Doctors are a regulated health profession with registration requirements, a defined scope of practice and accountability to a regulatory college. Dr. Vriend holds licence #3239.

Regulation is the reason you can expect a documented history, a rationale for every recommendation, and a professional who will tell you when something is outside her scope.

What the first appointment is actually like

Long, and mostly conversation. The history covers your health background, your current symptoms and how they behave over time, your diet, sleep, stress and exercise, your cycle where relevant, and every medication and supplement you are taking.

That last part matters more than people expect. Supplement and drug interactions are real, and a proper list is the only way to avoid them.

From there you get a plan, and an explanation of the reasoning behind each part of it. That may include dietary changes, specific supplementation, lifestyle adjustments, and laboratory testing where a test would genuinely change what is recommended.

Where the honest limits are

Naturopathic care is not a replacement for your family physician, and it is not a substitute for medical diagnosis. Anything that needs urgent assessment, investigation or prescription medicine belongs with your doctor or, for the areas within her scope, with our Nurse Practitioner. You will be told that directly rather than managed around it.

You will also be told when the honest answer is that a supplement is not going to fix what you have described. That is not a treatment failure; it is the assessment doing its job.

Practical details

The initial consultation is $220, with follow-ups at $119 for thirty minutes and $175 for sixty. A ten minute meet and greet beforehand is complimentary, in clinic, by phone or virtually, and costs you nothing if you decide not to go ahead. The plan is set collaboratively rather than assumed. Many private extended health plans in Ontario include naturopathic coverage, so it is worth checking yours in advance; naturopathic care is not covered by OHIP. A receipt suitable for insurance submission is provided.
