What PRP is doing on a scalp

Platelets are the cells your body sends first to any site of injury, and they carry growth factors whose job is to signal repair and to recruit blood supply. Platelet-rich plasma concentrates those platelets from your own blood into a small volume of plasma.

Injected around the follicles in a thinning area, the intention is to improve the local environment: the blood supply feeding the follicle, and the signalling that influences whether a follicle stays in its growth phase or shortens it.

In pattern hair loss the follicle does not disappear in one step. It miniaturises, producing progressively finer, shorter, less pigmented hairs over years. PRP is aimed squarely at that window, when the follicle is weakened but still there.

Which is exactly why timing matters

The single biggest determinant of whether PRP is worth your money is how far along the process is. Early miniaturisation, with visible fine hair still present, is where it has something to work on. A completely smooth, shiny scalp with no follicular openings is not.

We look at this specifically at consultation, and we would rather lose the booking than take payment for a course that cannot work on your scalp. Where the follicles are gone, hair transplant surgery is the honest option and we will say so.

If your hair is thinning because of an untreated thyroid problem, an iron deficiency, a shed following illness or childbirth, a medication you are taking, or an autoimmune process, PRP is not the answer to it, and in some of those cases the hair recovers on its own once the cause is addressed. Spending on a course of scalp injections in that situation is avoidable.

Our Nurse Practitioner can assess all of this, order relevant blood work, and prescribe where prescribing is appropriate. Come through that door first and PRP will either be part of your plan or it will not.

Who this suits, and who it does not

It suits you if you have early to moderate pattern thinning with follicles still present, if you can commit to a course and to maintenance, if you accept a treatment measured in months, and if you are comfortable with a blood draw.

It does not suit you if you have a bleeding or platelet disorder, if you take anticoagulants without clearance, if you have active scalp infection or inflammation, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Scarring alopecia and suspected autoimmune scalp disease are referred rather than treated.

At the appointment

Your scalp is examined and photographed with a consistent set of views, which is what makes a genuine before and after comparison possible later. A blood sample is drawn from your arm by a registered nurse and processed in a closed system while topical anaesthetic works on your scalp.

The plasma is then injected across the treatment area in a planned grid at a controlled depth. Cooling is used for comfort.

Afterwards

Expect tenderness, mild swelling and possible pinpoint bruising across the scalp for a day or so. You will be asked to leave your hair unwashed for a period, to avoid styling products, heat tools, colouring, saunas and heavy exercise for a short while, and to use sun protection on any exposed scalp.

Progress is reviewed against your photographs. Stabilisation, meaning less shedding and no further loss, is a legitimate outcome and often the first one to appear. If nothing is happening after the planned course, we will tell you and change the plan rather than repeat it.
